That man went to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and mentioned this matter to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“O so-and-so! Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Who is Ibn Abza? He replied: A freed slave. Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have appointed a freed slave as deputy over those people? Nafi’ explained to him that he is a scholar of Allah’s Book.
Chapter on Recitation of the Quran – On what others besides Abdullah ibn Amr were commanded to recite initially
Hadith Number: 773
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me to recite the Qur'an. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Learn to recite the three Surahs that begin with "Alif Lam Ra." The man said: I have grown old, my tongue has become heavy, and my heart has become hard (meaning my memory is weak). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then learn the three Surahs that begin with "Ha Meem." The man said similar words. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me a comprehensive Surah. So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught him Surah Az-Zalzalah, until when you reached this verse: "So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it." The man said: By the One Who has sent you with the truth, I will not care to learn anything more than this until I present myself before Allah, the Exalted. Tell me which deeds are obligatory upon me, I will do those deeds which I am able to do. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Perform the five prayers, fast in Ramadan, perform Hajj to the House of Allah, pay the Zakat from your wealth, enjoin good and forbid evil.

Chapter on Recitation of the Quran – Explaining that Al-Fatiha is among the best parts of the Quran
Hadith Number: 774
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was traveling. He dismounted from his ride, and one of his companions went behind him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his attention to him and said: "Shall I not tell you about the most excellent part of the Qur'an?" The narrator states: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited before him: "Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alamin." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "Shall I not tell you about the most excellent part of the Qur'an," means: (its recitation) is best for you. It does not mean that one part of the Qur'an is superior to another, because it is impossible for there to be preference (tafadul) in the speech of Allah Almighty (i.e., for one part to be given superiority over another).

Chapter on Recitation of the Quran – Explaining that Al-Fatiha is divided between the reciter and his Lord
Hadith Number: 775
Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty says: In the Torah and the Gospel, there is no Surah like Umm al-Qur'an (i.e., Surah al-Fatihah). This is the Sab‘ al-Mathani. It is divided between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive whatever he asks for." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The words of the narration, "There is nothing like Umm al-Qur'an (i.e., Surah al-Fatihah) in the Torah and the Gospel," mean that Allah Almighty does not grant as much reward to the reciter of the Torah and the Gospel as He grants to the reciter of Surah al-Fatihah. Because Allah Almighty, by His grace, has given this Ummah superiority over all other nations, and He has granted this Ummah more virtue for reciting His Word than He granted to other nations for reciting the Word revealed to them. And this is Allah Almighty's grace upon this Ummah, and for the other nations, it is His justice.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "Whoever performs prayer and does not recite Surah Al-Fatihah in it, then that prayer is incomplete, it is incomplete, it is not complete." The narrator states: A man said: O Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him)! Sometimes I am behind the Imam, so Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) struck my arm and said: O Persian! Recite it in your heart, I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say this: "Allah Almighty says: I have divided the prayer (i.e., the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah) between Myself and My servant into two parts, half of it is for My servant and half is for Me, and My servant will have what he asks for. When the servant recites «الحمد لله رب العلمين» , Allah Almighty says: My servant has praised Me. When the servant recites 'Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem', Allah Almighty says: My servant has extolled Me. When the servant recites «ملك يوم الدين» , Allah Almighty says: My servant has glorified Me, and this (the following verse) is between Me and My servant, he says: ' «اياك نعبد و اياك نستعين» ', and the remaining part after this is for My servant, and My servant will have what he asks for. He recites: 'Guide us to the straight path, the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.' (Allah Almighty says), so this thing will be given to My servant and My servant will have what he asks for."
