فصل في قيام الليل - ذكر الاقتصار للتهجد على قراءة قل هو الله أحد إذ هو ثلث القرآن إذا كان عاجزا عن قراءة ما هو أكثر منه
Section on night prayer – mentioning that reciting“Say: He is Allah, One”suffices for night prayer if unable to do more, as it is a third of the Qur’an
Hadith Number: 2576
اخبرنا ابو يعلى ، حدثنا عبيد الله بن معاذ العنبري ، حدثنا ابي ، حدثنا شعبة ، عن علي بن مدرك ، حدثنا إبراهيم النخعي ، عن الربيع بن خثيم ، عن ابن مسعود ، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: " ايعجز احدكم ان يقرا ثلث القرآن كل ليلة؟" قالوا: ومن يطيق ذلك يا رسول الله؟ قال:" قل هو الله احد" .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "Is any one of you incapable of reciting one third of the Qur'an every night?" We said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who among us can do that?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Reciting Surah Ikhlas is equal to reciting one third of the Qur'an."

فصل في قيام الليل - ذكر الأمر بركعتين بعد الوتر لمن خاف أن لا يستيقظ للتهجد وهو مسافر
Section on night prayer – mentioning the instruction to pray two rak’ahs after Witr for one who fears not waking up for night prayer while traveling
Hadith Number: 2577
اخبرنا ابن قتيبة ، حدثنا حرملة ، حدثنا ابن وهب ، حدثني معاوية بن صالح ، عن شريح ، عن عبد الرحمن بن جبير بن نفير ، عن ثوبان ، قال: كنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في سفر، فقال:" إن هذا السفر جهد وثقل، فإذا اوتر احدكم فليركع ركعتين، فإن استيقظ وإلا كانتا له" .
Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were traveling with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said: "This journey is a cause of hardship and burden, so when a person performs Witr, he should also perform two rak'ahs. If he wakes up (at the time of Fajr prayer), then fine, otherwise these two will suffice for him."

Section on night prayer – mentioning the Prophet’s parable of one who recites the Qur’an at night and one who sleeps on it
Hadith Number: 2578
اخبرنا ابن خزيمة ، حدثنا ابو عمار ، حدثنا الفضل بن موسى ، عن عبد الحميد بن جعفر ، عن سعيد المقبري ، عن عطاء مولى ابي احمد، عن ابي هريرة ، قال: بعث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بعثا، وهم نفر، فدعاهم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فقال:" ماذا معكم من القرآن؟" فاستقراهم، حتى مر على رجل منهم، هو من احدثهم سنا، فقال:" ماذا معك يا فلان؟" قال: معي كذا وكذا، وسورة البقرة، قال:" معك سورة البقرة؟" قال: نعم، قال:" اذهب فانت اميرهم"، فقال رجل هو اشرفهم: والذي كذا وكذا يا رسول الله، ما منعني ان لا اتعلم القرآن إلا خشية ان لا اقوم به، قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم:" تعلم القرآن واقراه وارقد، فإن مثل القرآن لمن تعلمه فقراه وقام به، كمثل جراب محشو مسكا تفوح ريحه كل مكان، ومن تعلمه فرقد وهو في جوفه كمثل جراب وكئ على مسك" .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched an expedition. They were some people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called them and asked: How much of the Qur'an do you know? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept asking them about their recitation until he passed by one among them who was the youngest. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: O so-and-so, how much of the Qur'an do you know? He replied: I know such-and-such surahs and also Surah Al-Baqarah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Do you know Surah Al-Baqarah? He replied: Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You go, you are the leader of these people. Then a man among them who was highly respected said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! By the One in whom these qualities are found, I did not acquire the knowledge of the Qur'an except because I feared that I would not be able to recite it in voluntary prayers. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You should acquire the knowledge of the Qur'an and also recite it, and you may also sleep. Whoever acquires the knowledge of the Qur'an and then recites it (in voluntary prayers), his example is like a musk-filled container whose mouth is open and its fragrance is spreading everywhere. And whoever acquires the knowledge of the Qur'an and then sleeps while the Qur'an is in his mind, his example is like a musk-filled container whose mouth is closed.

فصل في قيام الليل - ذكر ما كان صلى الله عليه وسلم يقرأ إذا تعار من الليل للتهجد
Section on night prayer – mentioning what the Prophet used to recite when waking up at night for prayer
Hadith Number: 2579
اخبرنا عمر بن سعيد بن سنان ، قال: اخبرنا احمد بن ابي بكر ، عن مالك ، عن مخرمة بن سليمان ، عن كريب ، عن ابن عباس ، قال:" نام رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم حتى إذا انتصف الليل، او قبله، او بعده بقليل، استيقظ رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يمسح النوم عن وجهه بيديه، ثم قرا العشر الآيات الخواتم من سورة آل عمران، ثم قام إلى شن معلقة، فتوضا منها" .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) slept until half the night had passed. It was either a little before or after half the night when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up. He wiped his hands over his face to remove the effects of sleep, then he recited the last ten verses of Surah Al-Imran. After that, he went towards a hanging water-skin and performed ablution from it.

Section on night prayer – mentioning how the Prophet would recite in night prayer
Hadith Number: 2580
اخبرنا الحسين بن إدريس الانصاري ، قال: اخبرنا احمد بن ابي بكر ، عن مالك ، عن ابن شهاب ، عن السائب بن يزيد ، عن المطلب بن ابي وداعة السهمي ، عن حفصة ، انها قالت:" إن كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلي في سبحته قاعدا، فيقرا بالسورة فيرتلها حتى تكون اطول من اطول منها" .
Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: (Sometimes) the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would begin to offer voluntary prayers while sitting. He would recite the surah with pauses, reciting it slowly, until it would seem longer than a surah that was actually longer than it.

Section on night prayer – mentioning the Prophet’s audible recitation of the Qur’an in night prayer
Hadith Number: 2581
اخبرنا محمد بن إسحاق بن خزيمة ، قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله بن عبد الحكم ، قال: حدثنا ابي ، قال: حدثنا الليث بن سعد ، عن خالد بن يزيد ، عن سعيد بن ابي هلال ، عن مخرمة بن سليمان ، ان كريبا اخبره، قال: سالت ابن عباس ، فقلت: ما صلاة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بالليل؟ قال:" كان صلى الله عليه وسلم يقرا في بعض حجره، فيسمع من كان خارجا" .
Kuraib narrates: I asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), I said: How did the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) perform prayer at night? He replied: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would be reciting (Qur'an) in his chamber, and a person outside the chamber could hear it.

فصل في قيام الليل - ذكر البيان بأن المصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلم لم يكن يجهر في صلاة الليل بقراءته كلها
Section on night prayer – clarification that the Prophet did not recite aloud throughout the entire night prayer
Hadith Number: 2582
اخبرنا الحسن بن سفيان ، قال: حدثنا عبد الاعلى بن حماد ، قال: حدثنا وهيب ، عن برد ابي العلاء ، عن عبادة بن نسي ، عن غضيف بن الحارث ، قال: قلت لعائشة : ارايت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يجهر بصلاته، او يخافت بها؟ قالت: " ربما جهر بصلاته، وربما خافت بها" ، قلت: الحمد لله الذي جعل في الامر سعة.
Ghudaif bin Harith reports: I asked Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): What do you say about the Prophet (peace be upon him)? Did he recite aloud or in a low voice while praying? Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: Sometimes he would recite aloud and sometimes in a low voice. So I said: All praise is due to Allah, who has provided flexibility in this matter.

Section on night prayer – mentioning the instruction for one praying at night to sleep if overcome by drowsiness
Hadith Number: 2583
اخبرنا الحسين بن إدريس الانصاري ، قال: اخبرنا احمد بن ابي بكر ، عن مالك ، عن هشام بن عروة ، عن ابيه ، عن عائشة ، ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: " إذا نام احدكم في صلاته، فليرقد حتى يذهب عنه النوم، فإن احدكم إذا قام يصلي وهو ناعس لعله يستغفر فيسب نفسه" .
Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "When a person feels sleepy at the time of prayer, he should go to sleep until his sleep is over, because it may happen that a person stands for prayer while he is drowsy and, thinking he is supplicating for forgiveness, he may actually be cursing himself."

فصل في قيام الليل - ذكر البيان بأن هذا الأمر أمر به الناعس في صلاته وإن لم يكن النوم غلب عليه
Section on night prayer – clarification that this instruction applies to one who is drowsy in prayer, even if not fully overcome by sleep
Hadith Number: 2584
اخبرنا الحسن بن سفيان ، قال: حدثنا بشر بن هلال الصواف ، قال: حدثنا عبد الوارث ، عن ايوب ، عن هشام بن عروة ، عن ابيه ، عن عائشة ، قالت: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: " إذا نعس الرجل وهو يصلي فلينصرف، لعله يكون يدعو في صلاته فيدعو على نفسه وهو لا يدري" .
Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person becomes drowsy during prayer, he should end the prayer, because it is possible that he thinks he is supplicating for himself during the prayer, but in reality, he may be supplicating for harm for himself and he does not even realize it."

فصل في قيام الليل - ذكر البيان بأن من استعجم عليه قراءته بالليل من النعاس أو النهار كان عليه الانفتال من صلاته
Section on night prayer – clarification that one who becomes confused in recitation at night or day due to drowsiness should end his prayer
Hadith Number: 2585
اخبرنا عبد الله بن محمد الازدي ، قال: حدثنا إسحاق بن إبراهيم ، قال: اخبرنا عبد الرزاق ، قال: اخبرنا معمر ، عن همام بن منبه ، عن ابي هريرة ، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: " إذا قام احدكم من الليل، فاستعجم القرآن على لسانه فلم يدر ما يقول، فليضطجع" .
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person is performing voluntary prayers at night and reciting the Qur'an becomes difficult for his tongue, and he does not realize what he is saying, then he should go to sleep."
