باب التيمم - ذكر الإباحة للمسافر أن ينزل في منزل بسبب من أسباب هذه الدنيا وهو غير واجد الماء
Chapter on Dry Ablution – Permission for a traveler to stop somewhere for worldly reasons even if water is not available
Hadith Number: 1317
Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: We were accompanying the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) on a journey. When we reached the place of "Baida" or perhaps "Dhat al-Jaish," my necklace fell. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) halted there to search for the necklace. The people also stayed there with him. There was no water nearby, nor did the people have any water with them. Some people came to Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Have you seen what Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) has done? She has compelled the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the people to stop here, even though there is no water nearby, and the people do not have any water either. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) expressed his displeasure (towards Lady Aisha) and said what Allah willed. He kept striking his hand on my side, but I did not move because the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sleeping with his head in my lap. Then, when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) woke up, it was morning and there was no water. So Allah Almighty revealed the verse regarding the command of tayammum (dry ablution), and the people performed tayammum. Upon this, Usaid bin Hudair, who was one of the leaders, said: O family of Abu Bakr, this is not your first blessing. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The camel I was riding, when we made it stand up, we found the necklace underneath it.

He said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "The angels, being pleased with the action of the seeker of knowledge, spread their wings for him." I asked him about wiping over the socks, so he informed me that the Messenger of Allah had commanded that when we are traveling, we may wipe for three days, and when we are residing, for one day and night. We would remove them when performing ablution due to defecation, urination, or sleep (but in the case of major impurity, they should be removed and the feet washed).

He replied: Yes! The Messenger of Allah commanded us that when we are in a state of travel (the narrator says, perhaps these are the words) when we are travelers, after defecating or urinating (while performing ablution), we should not remove our leather socks for three days and three nights (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words) do not take them off, except in the case of major ritual impurity (janabah), for which the ruling is different.

Zirr bin Hubaish narrates: I presented myself before Sayyiduna Safwan bin Assal Muradi. He inquired: Why have you come? I replied: For the acquisition of knowledge. He said: The angels spread their wings for the seeker of knowledge, being pleased with his quest. I said: I have some confusion in my mind regarding wiping over the socks (khuffain) after defecation and urination (while performing ablution). You are a companion of the Messenger of Allah. I have come to you to ask about this matter. Did you hear anything about this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He replied: Yes, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to command us, when we were in a state of travel (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words) when we were travelers, not to remove our socks for three days and three nights, except in the case of major impurity (janabah). However, in the case of defecation, urination, or sleep (when ablution is broken and we perform ablution), we would not remove them. I asked him: Did you hear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mention anything about desire? He replied: Yes, once we were traveling. A Bedouin called out to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a loud voice, "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)!" So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied to him in a voice similar to his (loudly), and said: "Come forward." We said to that Bedouin: "Woe to you! Lower your voice. You have been forbidden from this (from speaking loudly before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him))." That person said: "What is your opinion about a man who loves a people but does not join them?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He will be with those whom he loves on the Day of Resurrection." (The narrator states) After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to converse with us until he said: "There is a door towards the west, whose width is the distance of forty years. Allah created it for repentance on the day He created the heavens and the earth, and it will not be closed until the sun rises from that (western) side."
