Sufyan bin ‘Uyaynah narrates: The people of the Age of Ignorance used to say: The night and day have ruined us, they are the ones who destroyed us, they are the ones who gave us death, they are the ones who gave us life. So Allah the Exalted said:“This is nothing but our worldly life.”

Zuhri narrated from Sa‘id bin al-Musayyib, from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said:“Allah the Exalted says: The son of Adam hurts Me when he curses the time, for I am the time; the matter is in My hand, I alternate the night and the day, and when I will, I will withhold them.”

Then Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the orator of the Prophet (peace be upon him), stood up. He spoke, and the people liked his speech. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up and delivered a sermon. He (peace be upon him) said: O people! Speak according to common usage, for making speech lengthy and embellished is from Satan, and some eloquence is (like) magic.

Imam Sha’bi narrates: The secretary of Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) told me this: Sayyiduna Mu’awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote a letter to Sayyiduna Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) asking him to write and send any hadith that he had heard from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). So Sayyiduna Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) dictated the following: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say:“Indeed, Allah the Exalted has disliked three things for you: pointless argumentation, wasting wealth, and asking (or begging) excessively.”Ibn ‘Ulayyah says: Wasting wealth means spending it unjustly.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports: He received this hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "A strong believer is more beloved to Allah Almighty than a weak believer, though both are upon goodness. Strive for that which benefits you and do not become helpless. If something overcomes you, then say: This was the decree of Allah Almighty, and whatever He willed, happened. And avoid saying 'if' (i.e., saying: if this had happened, then that would have happened), for 'if' opens the door to the work of Satan."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah Almighty than the weak believer, though both are upon goodness. Be eager for that which benefits you, seek help from Allah regarding it, and do not be helpless. If any harm befalls you, do not say: 'If I had done such and such (then such and such would have happened),' but rather say: 'This was the decree of Allah Almighty; whatever He willed, He did,' because the word 'if' opens the door to the actions of Satan."

(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) There is a possibility that Ibn ‘Ajlan heard this narration from A‘raj, and he heard it from A‘raj on the authority of Muhammad bin Yahya, so once he narrated it on his authority, and another time he narrated it on the authority of another person.
